Jose Ignacio Goris, Cocaine Trafficking, Rhode Island 2014

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jose Ignacio Goris, a 42-year-old Providence resident, has been handed a five-year federal prison sentence for his role in a significant cocaine trafficking operation. The sentencing follows Goris’s conviction at trial for attempting to possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.

Goris was apprehended on August 14, 2014, after attempting to secure a kilogram of cocaine from what he believed to be a drug trafficker, who was actually an agent with the DEA Task Force. The package appeared as if it contained the illegal substance, and Goris was arrested almost immediately.

According to evidence presented in court, Goris had been communicating with two undercover agents since May 2014, posing as large-scale cocaine suppliers. During this time, Goris repeatedly expressed his eagerness to return to drug trafficking.

The scheme reached its climax on August 14 when Goris met an agent at a Warwick mall parking lot and examined what he thought was two kilograms of cocaine. He planned to retrieve funds for purchasing one kilo before he was intercepted by law enforcement. Goris’s arrest followed his negotiation of sale terms inside a Cranston retail store.

U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell, Jr., imposed the sentence, which was announced by United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Michael J. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s New England Field Division.

The case against Goris was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul F. Daly, Jr. The Rhode Island DEA Drug Task Force, a multi-agency collaboration, conducted the investigation that led to Goris’s conviction.
