Montgomery, Alabama – A registered nurse from Clanton, Alabama, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for tampering with Morphine Sulfate pain medication at Prattville Baptist Hospital. Susie Michelle Strength, 35, is accused of removing the drug from a vial and replacing it with saline solution before returning the vial to the hospital’s Pyxis machine.
U.S. Attorney George L. Beck, Jr., announced the charges against Strength, emphasizing that her actions posed a grave risk to patients who rely on proper medication for pain management. ‘These patients are often in severe pain and need this pain medication,’ said Beck. ‘To dilute the Morphine puts a patient in more pain and could be life-threatening.’
The indictment carries a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if Strength is found guilty of tampering with a consumer product. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Bob Anderson and Denise Simpson are handling the prosecution.
This case was investigated by the Food and Drug Administration’s Office of Criminal Investigations. The hospital’s prompt reporting of the incident is also commended by the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Strength is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
