ROANOKE, Va. – A New York man has received a 25-year federal prison sentence after his attempt to meet and have sex with a 14-year-old Lynchburg girl online. Derrick Loi, 27, from Lakeville, New York, pleaded guilty earlier this year to one count of coercion and enticement.
According to court documents, Loi began chatting with the teenager on Twitter (now known as X) in early February 2023. He confessed his interest not only in purchasing explicit images of her but also in meeting her in person for sexual encounters. Loi proposed a deal where he would pay the girl $300 for sex and unlimited access to explicit content at a weekly fee, eventually increasing to $100.
The sinister agreement included plans for Loi to travel from New York to Lynchburg, with discussions about specific acts and filming arrangements. He reserved a hotel room in Lynchburg and sent items he planned to use during their encounter to the girl via text message. However, his plans were thwarted when an officer of the Lynchburg Police Department approached him upon his arrival.
Loi initially gave false information to law enforcement but was later found with sex toys, a box containing morning-after pills, and pink vodka, which he had promised to the girl. The Federal Bureau of Investigation took over the investigation, with crucial support from the Lynchburg Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason M. Scheff prosecuted the case, bringing it under Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative aimed at protecting children from exploitation and abuse. For more information on Project Safe Childhood, visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov/.
