ROANOKE, Va. – In a chilling case of online predation, Derrick Loi, 27, from Lakeville, New York, was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison after attempting to have sex with a 14-year-old girl from Lynchburg, Virginia.
Loi, who had been communicating with the teen on Twitter (now known as X) and Discord, was caught when he arrived at the pre-arranged meeting location. He initially provided a false name and lied about his intentions to law enforcement.
The court documents reveal that Loi not only expressed interest in buying sexually explicit images from the girl but also planned to meet her for sex in person. He proposed to become her ‘sugar daddy’ with a weekly fee for access to explicit content, which was to escalate over time.
On February 22, 2023, Loi made a payment to the victim according to their agreement and began discussing plans for his trip from New York. During the 8-hour drive, he sent messages and photos of items he brought for their encounter.
The Lynchburg Police Department was instrumental in the investigation, which also involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The search of Loi’s vehicle uncovered sex toys, contraceptives, and pink vodka as evidence of his intent.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason M. Scheff prosecuted the case, which falls under Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative to protect children from exploitation. More information about this critical program can be found at www.projectsafechildhood.gov/.
