John Don Bannister Jr, Child CSAM Production, FL 2024

OCALA, FLORIDA – John Don Bannister Jr., 31, of Clermont, has confessed to a sickening crime: the production of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the guilty plea today, revealing a depraved scheme that preyed on a vulnerable 14-year-old victim. Bannister now stares down the barrel of a lengthy federal prison sentence.

According to court documents, Bannister engaged in the production of CSAM on April 26 and May 4, 2023, right here in Lake County. But the exploitation didn’t stop there. Investigators uncovered a disturbing pattern of behavior – Bannister allegedly supplied vape pens and drugs to minors, creating a dangerous dependency. Then, he exploited that dependency, demanding nude images and videos in return.

The details are particularly chilling. Bannister wasn’t just a passive recipient of illicit material; he actively produced it, further compounding the severity of his offenses. He faces a minimum of 15 years, and potentially up to 30 years, in federal prison for each of the two counts to which he pleaded guilty. That means a potential maximum sentence of 60 years behind bars.

This wasn’t a random act. Law enforcement, led by Homeland Security Investigations, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Mascotte Police Department, built a case demonstrating a calculated effort to exploit children. Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Janette Swartzberg is prosecuting the case, ensuring Bannister is held accountable for his actions.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat the escalating epidemic of child sexual exploitation. The program, spearheaded by the Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney’s Offices, pools resources to identify predators, rescue victims, and deliver justice. Bannister’s actions underscore the continued need for vigilance and aggressive prosecution in these horrific cases.

Bannister remains detained pending sentencing. A sentencing date has not yet been set, but when it is, Grimy Times will be there to report on the outcome. A child’s life could depend on it.
