Lawyer’s Gun Charges Land Him in Prison

52-year-old Adrian Antonio Chavez, an attorney practicing in Odessa, Texas, has been sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for being a drug user in possession of a firearm.

U.S. District Judge David Counts handed down the sentence in Midland yesterday. In addition to the prison term, Chavez will also have to pay a $10,000 fine. He will be on supervised release for three years after his prison term.

According to court records, the Odessa Police Department executed a search warrant at Chavez’s residence on February 19, 2021, after receiving information from several sources that he had received quantities of methamphetamine. Officers found a cache of firearms, including a Springfield Armory Hellcat 9mm, a Taurus Brasil 357 Magnum, a Rossi RS22 .22 caliber rifle, a Remington Wingmaster 870TB 12-gauge shotgun, and a Remington 770 .30-06 caliber rifle. They also seized a quantity of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

Chavez pleaded guilty to one count of being a drug user in possession of a firearm on April 15, 2021, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald C. Griffin.

The case was investigated by the Odessa Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Glenn Harwood prosecuted the case.

Chavez’s sentencing marks a significant blow to the reputation of the Odessa legal community. As a practicing attorney, Chavez had access to sensitive information and handled high-stakes cases. His involvement in the methamphetamine trade and possession of firearms raises serious questions about his fitness to practice law.

The investigation into Chavez’s activities is ongoing, and it is unclear whether he will face further charges.
