Genesis Calvin Moore, Theft of Government Property, Virginia 2015

Genesis Calvin Moore, 25, of Hampton, Virginia, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 18 months for a brazen theft spree targeting U.S. Navy assets. The former Navy sailor was hit with charges of theft of government property, interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles, and possession of stolen vehicles—crimes that unfolded across Virginia and Georgia.

Moore pleaded guilty on July 15, admitting to court documents that on May 4, 2015, he stole a trailer loaded with fitness equipment from the U.S. Navy Morale, Welfare, and Recreation department at Naval Station Norfolk. Weeks later, on or about June 7, 2015, he escalated the crime by stealing a Freightliner truck assigned to the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier.

He didn’t stop there. Moore used the stolen military truck to haul two stolen Bobcat construction vehicles nearly 600 miles to Loganville, Georgia. There, he listed them for sale on Craigslist, attempting to cash in on the illicit haul. But law enforcement was waiting. He was arrested in Loganville before the deal could go through.

One of the Bobcats was recovered and returned to its rightful owner. In a stunning repeat, Moore managed to steal the very same Bobcat a month later and tried selling it again—this time on Craigslist for a second time. His pattern of theft and resale exposed a calculated effort to exploit stolen equipment for personal gain.

The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith in Norfolk, includes over $80,000 in restitution Moore must pay directly to the U.S. Navy. The judgment reflects the financial toll and breach of trust tied to stealing government property and abusing access granted during his Navy service.

Dana J. Boente, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Timothy Quick, Special Agent in Charge of the NCIS Norfolk Field Office, confirmed the sentencing. Prosecution was led by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Alyssa K. Nichol and Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Stoker. Court records are available under Case No. 2:16-cr-38 via PACER and the Eastern District of Virginia’s federal court website.
