Michael Rohrick, Felon in Possession of Stolen Handguns, Iowa 2014

Michael Rohrick, a 28-year-old Oelwein resident with a criminal past, was handed down a sentence of more than five years in federal prison for his brazen possession of stolen handguns. Rohrick pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition on February 24, 2014.

The plea agreement revealed that police discovered the illegal cache during a raid on Rohrick’s home, where they found a loaded 9mm handgun, drug paraphernalia, and evidence of marijuana distribution. Three days later, Rohrick confessed to hiding another stolen handgun in his residence, leading to an additional search and discovery of a .327 caliber revolver.

Rohrick had been barred from owning firearms due to a 2009 burglary conviction in Fayette County, Iowa. His latest offense was part of a larger pattern of criminal activity, as the court noted multiple burglary convictions on his record. The sentencing took place in Cedar Rapids, where Chief Judge Linda R. Reade sentenced Rohrick to 71 months’ imprisonment and an additional three years of supervised release.

The sentence was also influenced by Rohrick’s role in drug trafficking, leading to a special assessment of $100. With no parole available in the federal system, Rohrick will serve his time under the custody of the United States Marshal until transport to a federal prison can be arranged.

Assistant United States Attorney C.J. Williams prosecuted the case, which was investigated by both the Oelwein Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
