
Nathaniel Lee, 35, of Columbus, Ohio, has been sentenced to time served and three years of supervised release after being found guilty of conspiracy to utter and pass counterfeit Federal Reserve notes.
PITTSBURGH, PA – Lee was convicted for his role in a conspiracy that involved obtaining and passing counterfeit $100 bills in Western Pennsylvania. According to the investigation, Lee and his co-conspirators obtained the counterfeit bills in Ohio and transported them into the Western District of Pennsylvania.
The group then used the counterfeit bills at various retail stores in the area, passing them off as legitimate currency. On numerous occasions, they received legitimate currency as change, further perpetuating the scheme.
Lee was also found to possess several counterfeit Federal Reserve notes in the denomination of $100.
Assistant United States Attorney Mary McKeen Houghton prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The United States Secret Service, the Scott Township Police Department, the North Fayette Police Department, and the Bethel Park Police Department conducted the investigation.
Chief United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti imposed the sentence on Lee, who will serve the remaining time of his sentence under supervision. This case highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies in preventing and prosecuting financial crimes.
The use of counterfeit currency is a serious offense that can have far-reaching consequences. Law enforcement agencies must remain vigilant in their efforts to detect and prevent these types of crimes.
