BOISE – The grim saga of Gary Hastler, 67, from Delaware, Ohio, reached its dark conclusion as the U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit announced a sentence of 240 months in federal prison for his heinous crime of producing child sexual abuse material.
Hastler’s predatory behavior came to light when a young victim disclosed multiple instances of sexual exploitation at the hands of Hastler during the summer of 2022. The Boise Police Department (BPD) delved into the case, only to uncover a chilling truth: Hastler had also preyed upon another child in Ohio.
In an eerie twist, explicit images of the Idaho victim were discovered on Hastler’s cellphone by the Delaware Police Department during their investigation of the Ohio abuse. With this vital piece of evidence, BPD secured a federal search warrant and confirmed Hastler’s production of sexually explicit images of the Idaho victim while staying at a hotel in Boise.
U.S. District Judge Amanda K. Brailsford did not shy away from justice, sentencing Hastler to a lifetime term of supervised release alongside his prison sentence. The registered sex offender status is now a chilling reality for Hastler as he faces the consequences of his actions.
“This case underscores the relentless pursuit of justice against those who exploit our children,” stated U.S. Attorney Hurwit. “Our partnerships in Idaho are paramount in identifying and tracking down sex offenders, regardless of where they may hide.”
The cooperative efforts of BPD, Delaware PD, and the Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force were commended for their pivotal role in Hastler’s prosecution. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kassandra McGrady led the legal battle against the predator.
This case is a part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The partnership between the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Idaho and the Idaho Attorney General’s Office ensures a comprehensive approach to locating, apprehending, and prosecuting individuals who exploit children online.
