Oklahoma Man Charged With Large-Scale Cocaine Trafficking

SCRANTON – Manuel Escarcega, a 30-year-old man from Oklahoma, has been indicted on serious drug trafficking and conspiracy charges.

According to United States Attorney David J. Freed, Escarcega is accused of conspiring to distribute over five kilograms of cocaine between November 2016 and February 2017, and possessing with intent to distribute over five kilograms of cocaine on February 8, 2017, in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.

The investigation, led by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department, uncovered evidence of Escarcega’s alleged involvement in large-scale cocaine trafficking.

Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara is prosecuting the case, which is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative. PSN aims to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer by partnering with law enforcement and local communities.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals. The program brings together federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to develop effective strategies to reduce violent crime.

Escarcega faces a mandatory minimum sentence of ten years in prison if convicted. The maximum penalty under federal law is up to life in prison, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.

A judge will impose a sentence after considering the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account the nature, circumstances, and seriousness of the offense, as well as the defendant’s history and characteristics.

The case highlights the ongoing efforts to combat large-scale drug trafficking and reduce violent crime in Pennsylvania.
