Omar Smith, 25, Charged with Gun and Narcotics Violations
A 25-year-old Pittsburgh resident, Omar Smith, has been indicted on charges of violating federal firearms and narcotics laws, according to United States Attorney David J. Hickton.
Smith, 25, was named as the sole defendant in a three-count indictment, which alleges that he possessed a .357 Taurus pistol and ammunition despite being a convicted felon. Federal law prohibits individuals with felony convictions from possessing firearms or ammunition.
The indictment states that Smith was previously convicted of felony drug charges in Allegheny County on four separate dates between 2008 and 2011, and again violated drug laws on June 21, 2012.
The law provides for a minimum sentence of 15 years and a maximum of life in prison, a fine of up to $4,250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history of the defendant.
Assistant United States Attorney Ross E. Lenhardt is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The investigation was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Coraopolis Police Department, and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, with the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
It’s essential to note that an indictment is an accusation, and Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law. The case is pending and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The people of Pittsburgh deserve to live in a safe and crime-free community. We will continue to work tirelessly to bring those who break the law to justice and ensure that they face the consequences of their actions.
