Troy Man Charged with Marijuana Trafficking and Gun Crimes
An indictment has been unsealed charging Omjasisa Kentu Felder, 53, of Troy, New York, with marijuana trafficking and gun crimes. The charges, brought by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York, were announced by United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman, along with various law enforcement officials.
The indictment alleges that Felder possessed a 9mm handgun in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, possessed the handgun as a convicted felon, and possessed marijuana with intent to distribute in November 2022, and conspired to distribute marijuana between 2021 and November 2022.
Felder was arraigned today in Albany, before United States Magistrate Judge Daniel J. Stewart, and ordered detained pending trial. If convicted, Felder faces at least 5 years and up to life imprisonment for possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime; up to 15 years in prison for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon; and up to 5 years in prison on each of the marijuana trafficking counts.
Felder also faces a fine of up to $250,000 on each count and a term of post-release supervision of at least 2 years and up to life. The ATF, DEA, Troy Police Department, and HSI are investigating the case. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cyrus P.W. Rieck and Dustin C. Segovia are prosecuting the case.
This prosecution is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation, which identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States by using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.
Felder’s case is a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against drug trafficking and gun violence in our communities. The work of law enforcement officials and prosecutors in this case is a testament to their dedication to keeping our communities safe.
As the case against Felder moves forward, our thoughts are with the victims and their families who have been affected by his alleged crimes. We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
