BIRMINGHAM, AL (Grimy Times) – Oscar Adrian Castillo, a 25-year-old Mexican man, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for distributing methamphetamine and possessing illegal firearms in Jefferson County, Alabama.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Castillo was sentenced on [sentencing date] by U.S. District Court Judge R. David Proctor for one count of illegally distributing more than 50 grams of methamphetamine on September 15, and one count of possessing firearms on September 20 while an illegal resident in the United States.
Castillo pleaded guilty to the charges in November and, as part of his plea agreement with the government, admitted to selling 84.5 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant on September 15 in the parking lot of the Walmart in Bessemer.
ATF agents, Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force executed a search warrant at Castillo’s Bessemer residence five days later and recovered a Remington 12-gauge shotgun and a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber pistol.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force (WANTF), and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney John B. Felton prosecuting the case.
Castillo’s sentence marks a significant blow to the flow of methamphetamine in Jefferson County, and serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in such activities. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle the networks responsible for distributing these deadly substances.
