Raleigh Man Convicted in $2M Credit Card Scam

RALEIGH – In a shocking turn of events, PA Ambrose Mendy, 31, of Raleigh, has been convicted of a brazen credit card scam at Walmart and Sam’s Club. The scam, which netted over $2 million, involved the use of counterfeit credit cards to purchase gift cards and stored-value Visa cards.

The scheme, which was uncovered by the United States Secret Service, involved the defendant and nine codefendants acquiring stolen credit card numbers online and encoding them onto plastic cards containing magnetic strips. These cards were then used to purchase gift cards and stored-value Visa cards at Walmart stores around the state.

The indictment alleged that the conspirators would take the genuine gift cards to Sam’s Club stores and use them to purchase more than $1 million in cigarettes and stored-value Visa cards, which could then be sold off for cash. The scam, which was carried out over a period of time, is estimated to have netted the conspirators over $2 million.

PA Ambrose Mendy was found guilty of Conspiracy to Commit Access Device Fraud, Conspiracy to Commit Money Laundering, and two counts of Access Device Fraud. The defendant’s codefendants, Malamin Ousman Sonko, Salifu Jallow, and Abdoulaie Francis Lowe Nicolas, are still at large and are being sought by the authorities.

The investigation into the scam was conducted by the United States Secret Service, with the assistance of the Defense Criminal Investigative Service and numerous local law enforcement agencies. At trial, the United States was represented by Assistant United States Attorneys William M. Gilmore and Melissa Kessler of the Economic Crimes Division.
