Passport Fraud Lands El Salvadorian National in Hot Water
In a brazen case of identity theft, El Salvadorian national Eliseo Rivas has been indicted on a passport fraud charge in Massachusetts federal court.
Rivas, 41, a former Chelsea resident, is accused of impersonating another individual in order to obtain a U.S. passport in 2016.
According to court documents, the suspect faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
The United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and William B. Gannon, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, Boston Field Office, announced the indictment today.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of Lelling’s Major Crimes Unit. ‘This case highlights the importance of safeguarding our nation’s security through the verification of individuals applying for passports,’ said Lelling.
Rivas’ indictment serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of passport fraud, a crime that can have far-reaching implications for national security.
