Repeat Offender Sentenced to 16 Months in Prison for Illegal Reentry
MADISON, WIS. — A Mexican national has been sentenced to 16 months in federal prison after being convicted of illegally reentering the United States.
Paulino Gonzalez-Zarate, 30, was sentenced on July 18, 2022, by Chief U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson to 16 months in prison for his crime.
Gonzalez-Zarate was first brought to the attention of federal authorities after he was arrested on March 27, 2022, and charged with domestic violence offenses, including strangulation and second-degree sexual assault. On May 11, 2022, he was indicted by a federal grand jury for illegal reentry.
As a repeat offender, Gonzalez-Zarate has been convicted of illegal reentry before. This second conviction, combined with his recent arrest for domestic violence offenses, led Chief Judge Peterson to order a 16-month prison term to deter further reoffending.
The federal sentence will run consecutive to any sentence imposed in the pending state case on the domestic violence offenses, ensuring separate treatment for separate offenses.
The investigation into Gonzalez-Zarate was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Meredith P. Duchemin and Anita Marie Boor prosecuted the case.
