Anthony Mansini, Heroin Trafficking Conspiracy, Illinois 2012

A Pekin man is facing federal charges of conspiracy to distribute heroin and distribution of heroin resulting in three deaths.

Anthony Mansini, 22, of the 4400 block of Meadow Drive, made his initial appearance in federal court yesterday.

According to the indictment, Mansini conspired with others to distribute more than 1,000 grams of heroin and possession of more than 1,000 grams of heroin with intent to distribute from 2008 to December 2012.

The indictment alleges that Mansini is responsible for three deaths attributed to heroin distribution on Aug. 25, 2012, Nov. 12, 2012, and Nov. 15, 2012.

Members of the public are reminded that an indictment is merely an accusation; the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

U.S. Attorney Jim Lewis announced the charges, along with Tazewell County State’s Attorney Stewart J. Umholtz, and members of the Tazewell County Major Crimes Task Force and the Peoria Metropolitan Enforcement Group.

If convicted, Mansini faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of conspiracy to distribute more than 1,000 grams of heroin and possession of more than 1,000 grams of heroin with intent to distribute, and distribution of heroin.

However, if it is found that death or serious bodily injury resulted from the use of the heroin, the penalty is a mandatory 20 years in prison to life sentence.

Trial is scheduled for May 6, 2013, before Chief U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid, and Mansini was ordered to remain in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
