A brazen attempt to bring 2.8 kilograms of cocaine into the United States through Newark Liberty International Airport has been foiled, thanks to the diligent work of law enforcement officers. Perez Omar Gibbs, a 38-year-old Jamaican national, pleaded guilty to the crime on an unknown date, but admitted to the charges in court.
**THE CRIME**
Gibbs arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport aboard a flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Law enforcement officers discovered that Gibbs possessed approximately 2.8 kilograms of cocaine concealed inside two bags of coffee and four picture frames. This significant cache of narcotics was a clear breach of the nation’s borders.

Gibbs pleaded guilty to one count of importation of controlled substances, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a potential maximum penalty of 40 years in prison, and a maximum fine of $5 million.
**THE INVESTIGATION**
Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig credited special agents of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, New Jersey Division, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Jason J. Molina; and officers of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, under the direction of Marty Raybon, Acting Director of Field Operations, New York Field Office, with the investigation leading to today’s guilty plea.
**SENTENCING**
Sentencing is scheduled for October 20, 2021. Gibbs’s fate will be decided by U.S. District Judge Katharine S. Hayden. The court has the discretion to impose a sentence within the range of five to 40 years in prison and a fine of up to $5 million.
