SCRANTON, PA – Pernell Riddick, a 36-year-old resident of Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania, will spend the next fifteen years behind bars after receiving a harsh sentence for flooding Monroe County with deadly drugs. U.S. District Judge Julia K. Munley handed down the 180-month (15-year) prison term today, marking a significant blow against drug trafficking in the region.
Riddick was convicted of possession with intent to distribute a trifecta of Schedule II controlled substances: methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cocaine. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania revealed that on or about September 2, 2022, Riddick was caught red-handed with the illicit drugs, fueling the opioid crisis and lining his pockets with the profits of misery.
But the drugs weren’t the only weapons in Riddick’s arsenal. Authorities also discovered he was packing heat – a 9-millimeter Smith & Wesson handgun and a 9-millimeter Taurus G2C. The presence of these firearms underscores the dangerous connection between drug trafficking and violent crime, a reality law enforcement officials are battling daily.
Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus emphasized that this case is part of the larger “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide crackdown aimed at dismantling cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent actors. The operation leverages the combined resources of the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN).
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Pocono Mountain Regional Police Department, brought Riddick’s operation to a screeching halt. Assistant United States Attorney Tatum R. Wilson skillfully prosecuted the case, securing the lengthy sentence and sending a clear message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated.
This conviction stands as a stark reminder of the relentless fight against the influx of illegal drugs into Pennsylvania communities. While one trafficker is off the streets, the Grimy Times will continue to report on the ongoing battle against those who prey on vulnerable populations and endanger public safety. The sentence serves as a warning: peddle poison, and you will face the full force of the law.
