ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – On January 26, 2022, a shocking incident unfolded in Coolidge, New Mexico. Peter Oka, 30, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, allegedly got into an argument with the occupants of a house located on the Navajo Nation Reservation.
According to a criminal complaint, Oka retrieved a firearm and fired multiple rounds into the ceiling. The situation escalated, and Oka allegedly pointed the firearm at two victims, shooting them multiple times. The victims, Jane Doe and another individual, sustained serious injuries. Oka also shot himself.
John Doe, one of the victims, sustained several gunshot wounds to the chest. Oka had a gunshot wound that entered his neck and exited around his ear.
The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated this case with assistance from the Navajo Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Elisa Dimas is prosecuting the case.
A complaint is only an allegation. A defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. If convicted, Oka faces a minimum of 10 years and up to life in prison.
Peter Oka appeared for his preliminary and detention hearing on February 10, 2022. The court ordered Oka detained pending trial.
The incident highlights the importance of community safety and the need for responsible ownership of firearms. This case serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of violent behavior.
