BIRMINGHAM – Ten individuals, including pharmacy owners, pharmacists, a nurse practitioner, and sales representatives, have been charged in an alleged $200 million prescription drug fraud scheme. The indictment, filed against Northside Pharmacy, doing business as Global Compounding Pharmacy, based in Haleyville, Ala., outlines 103 counts of fraudulent billing to health care insurers.
In one astonishing instance, the defendants are accused of causing a prescription plan administrator to pay over $29,000 for a single tube of cream advertised to treat ‘general wounds’.
Leading the ring is John Jeremy Adams, 38, of Panama City Beach, Florida. He owns and presides over Global, facing 38 counts in the indictment. Adams was arrested on Wednesday and arraigned on Thursday in the Northern District of Florida.
The full list of defendants includes Ashley Adams, director of HR for Global; Jeffrey Black, owner and vice president; James A. Mays, III, pharmacist; Jessica Linton, manager of billing; Lisa Holmes, district manager; John Gladden, district manager; Christi Cunningham, sales representative; Juan Rodriguez, biller; and Lori Dawn Edenfield, nurse practitioner.
U.S. Attorney Jay E. Town emphasized the impact of the scheme on health insurance plans and patients with real medical needs. ‘Motivated by greed, the defendants executed a brazen healthcare fraud conspiracy and scheme,’ said Town. ‘Their scheme deprived health insurance plans of money that could have gone to assist patients with real medical needs.’
John F. Khin, Special Agent in Charge for DCIS, highlighted the waste of taxpayer funds and the deprivation of legitimate prescription medications to U.S. military members and their families. ‘Through our aggressive investigative efforts, we helped stop this shameful abuse,’ said Khin.
