Paulette G Toller, Controlled Substance Distribution, Virginia 2020

DANVILLE, Virginia – In a stunning blow to prescription drug enforcement, former Danville pharmacy technician Paulette G. Toller has been sentenced to 13 months in federal prison for her role in the illegal distribution of controlled substances.

Toller, a seasoned employee at Sovah Health Danville since 2001, pleaded guilty in February 2020 to a litany of charges including possession with intent to distribute, acquisition and obtaining possession by misrepresentation, fraud, forgery, or deception.

But Toller’s crime went beyond the typical pharmacist’s duties; she exploited a “loophole” within the hospital’s automated dispensing system. Court documents reveal that Toller had managed to withdraw controlled substances under expired codes for her own personal use, with substances such as hydrocodone and oxycodone making their way into her hands.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, Virginia State Police, and Danville Police Department worked tirelessly to unravel this sophisticated operation. Assistant United States Attorneys Michael Baudinet and Randy Ramseyer led the prosecution effort, ensuring that Toller faced the full weight of federal law.

United States Attorney Thomas T. Cullen and Jesse Fong, Special Agent in Charge of DEA’s Washington Field Division, announced the sentence, underscoring the serious nature of prescription drug trafficking in our communities. Toller’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who undermine the integrity of pharmaceutical systems.

As Danville grapples with the repercussions of this case, the community is left to ponder how such a breach of trust could occur within the healthcare profession. The sentencing of Paulette G. Toller marks another chapter in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and prescription abuse.
