Philadelphia’s Grant Shea, a 30-year-old resident, has been hit with serious charges for the receipt, distribution, and possession of child pornography. The grim accusations were announced by Acting United States Attorney Louis D. Lappen today.
This isn’t Shea’s first brush with the law on these charges; he was initially indicted on July 14, 2016. According to the latest indictment dated May 18, 2017, Shea engaged in his despicable activities over the Internet in January 2017, and even managed to distribute child pornography while on pretrial release.
The severity of the charges is evident as a conviction could land Shea behind bars for up to 60 years, with a mandatory minimum sentence of five years. The consequences don’t stop there; he also faces fines totaling $750,000, mandatory restitution, and additional assessments totaling over $30,000.
Operation Safe Childhood, the Justice Department’s nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse, has been mobilized in this case. It is a battle against the digital epidemic of child pornography that has seen federal, state, and local resources deployed to apprehend predators like Shea.
The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) took the lead on the investigation, while Assistant United States Attorney Priya T. De Souza is tasked with the prosecution. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against online pedophilia and the relentless pursuit of justice for victims.
