SCRANTON, PA – The grimy halls of justice were once again filled with the reverberating sound of charges this week as Carl R. Bonser, 56, a man who once held the revered position of postmaster in Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania, found himself facing a one-count criminal information for false, fictitious, or fraudulent claims.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, it is alleged that Bonser, while serving as the Postmaster of the Orwigsburg Post Office between January 1, 2016, and October 31, 2016, falsified travel expenses, siphoning off $6,500 from the United States Postal Service (USPS).
United States Attorney Bruce D. Brandler did not mince words as he outlined the allegations against Bonser, stating that his actions were not only criminal but also a betrayal of the trust placed in him by the USPS.
Bonser, it seems, is preparing to face the music as he has entered into a plea agreement, which, pending court approval, indicates his intention to plead guilty at his arraignment in federal court.
The investigation was led by none other than the United States Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenny P. Roberts will be prosecuting this case with the same vigor that has come to be expected from such dedicated public servants.
As the grimy details of Bonser’s downfall were revealed, it was made clear that he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, a principle as fundamental to our legal system as it is universally respected. Should he be found guilty, the judge will consider applicable federal sentencing statutes and guidelines when imposing a sentence, which could include up to five years of imprisonment, supervised release, and a fine.
With this case, the USPS continues its relentless pursuit of justice and integrity within its ranks, ensuring that those who would misuse their positions for personal gain are held accountable. #PostmasterFraud
