A federal grand jury in Santa Ana, California, has indicted Adrian Andrew Martinez, 20, of Pico Rivera, charging him with one count of conspiracy to impede a federal officer—a felony that carries a maximum sentence of six years in federal prison.
Martinez’s arraignment is set for Thursday at the United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles. According to Acting United States Attorney Bill Essayli, ‘He now faces up to six years in prison for his conduct. There are serious, life-altering consequences for impeding law enforcement.’
The incident unfolded on June 17 when federal agents attempted to arrest an individual believed to be an illegal alien in the parking lot of a Pico Rivera shopping center. Martinez, who worked at a nearby Walmart, stopped and exited his vehicle, confronting Border Patrol agents.
Several other individuals also halted their vehicles and parked near the agents, partially blocking the lanes as they tried to leave the area with the arrestee. The crowd in cars honked and shouted at the agents, surrounding them from both vehicles and on foot. Martinez positioned his vehicle to block the agents’ path, using a large trash can as a barrier.
An indictment is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Homeland Security Investigations is investigating this matter, with Assistant United States Attorney Alexander P. Robbins handling the prosecution.
