United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced the sentence of Scott Reiners, a 37-year-old Pierre, South Dakota man, who has been convicted of Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person. The court, presided over by U.S. District Judge Eric C. Schulte, imposed a 12-year-and-four-month federal prison term on July 14, 2025. Reiners, who was indicted in July 2024, pleaded guilty on April 3, 2025.
The sentence stems from a drug conspiracy that took place between September 2022 and April 2023. Reiners, along with several other individuals, conspired to distribute methamphetamine in central South Dakota, including within the Crow Creek and Lower Brule Sioux Indian Reservations. During this operation, Reiners was responsible for distributing between 5 kilograms and 15 kilograms of methamphetamine.
In addition to the prison term, Reiners must serve five years of supervised release and pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. A further $1,000 fine was also imposed. His prior felony convictions make him prohibited from possessing firearms, which came into play during a traffic stop where he was seized with 254 grams of 97% pure methamphetamine and a handgun.
The investigation leading to Reiners’ conviction was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted the case.
This sentence is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in neighborhoods across America. The initiative focuses on fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
Reiners was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing.
