Pierre Man Jailed for Failing to Register as Sex Offender

Kape Teal Burgee, a 25-year-old man from Pierre, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 21 months in federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender.

According to court documents, Burgee absconded from the Community Transition Program in Rapid City from September 2016 to October 2018, and knowingly failed to register and update his registration. This is a serious offense under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.

Burgee was indicted by a federal grand jury on December 11, 2018, and found guilty on July 7, 2019, after a court trial. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service.

U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange sentenced Burgee to 21 months in federal prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100. Burgee was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
