A Pierre woman is accused of embezzling thousands of dollars in government funds, according to court records.
Brandis Rose Rose, 37, was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 12, 2013, for Theft of Government Funds, related to the alleged embezzlement of Title II funds from the Social Security Administration.
Rose appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on April 22, 2013 and pled not guilty to the indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years in custody, a $250,000, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and a $100 special assessment. Restitution may also be ordered.
The charge is merely an accusation and Rose is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty, according to court records.
The investigation is being conducted by the Office of the Inspector General, Social Security Administration. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller is prosecuting the case.
Rose was released on bond pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
The indictment marks the latest in a series of high-profile cases involving government corruption in South Dakota.
The Social Security Administration has been plagued by allegations of embezzlement and misconduct in recent years, with several employees facing charges for stealing from the agency.
