Pierre Woman Sentenced for Theft of Government Funds
A Pierre woman was sentenced to 1 month in custody, 5 months of home confinement, and 3 years of supervised release for her role in a theft of government funds scheme.
According to court documents, 38-year-old Brandis Rose Rose embezzled over $8,000 in Old Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program funds to which she was not entitled.
Rose worked as an employee of South Dakota CARES, a Social Security Administration-approved fee-for-service organizational payee, from July 6 through November 16, 2009.
During her tenure, Rose handled the accounts for 14 beneficiaries and allegedly misappropriated $8,718.08 in funds, converting them to her own use.
The SSA Office of Inspector General conducted an audit and interviewed the 14 beneficiaries, determining that Rose had indeed misappropriated the funds.
U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, which was handed down by U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange. In addition to her prison sentence, Rose was ordered to pay $8,418.08 in restitution and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Rose will immediately begin serving her 5 months of home confinement and will self-report to the U.S. Marshals Office on January 6, 2014, to begin serving her 1 month of custody.
