Pine Ridge Man Sentenced to Life for Aggravated Sexual Abuse
A disturbing case of child abuse has ended with a guilty verdict and a life sentence for a Pine Ridge man. Robert Dowty, Sr., a 59-year-old resident of Pine Ridge, was found guilty of Aggravated Sexual Abuse following a jury trial in Rapid City on August 2, 2019.
According to court records, Dowty was accused of forcibly sexually assaulting a child under the age of 16 years between June and September of 2018 at Pine Ridge. The case took a turn for the worse when additional victims came forward to testify about past sexual abuse by Dowty.
Acting United States Attorney Dennis R. Holmes announced that Dowty was sentenced to life in federal prison on August 26, 2021, by Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court. The defendant was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve a lifetime of supervised release.
The investigation into Dowty’s crimes was carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case and secured the guilty verdict.
Dowty’s immediate remand to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service was a direct result of his conviction. The lengthy sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the lasting impact on his victims.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators of child abuse accountable for their actions. The conviction and sentence in this case are a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement and prosecutors in bringing justice to victims of child abuse.
