MOBILE, AL – Another cog in the Darrin Southall drug empire is headed to federal prison. Henderson Pippins, 45, of Mobile, was sentenced to 197 months – over 16 years – on September 25, 2025, for his role in a large-scale cocaine and heroin trafficking operation that saturated the Mobile area. The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Terry F. Moorer.
Pippins pled guilty to charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and heroin, as well as possession with intent to distribute cocaine. Court records paint a picture of Southall’s operation as a “continuing criminal enterprise” – a ruthless, sustained effort to flood the streets with drugs and then wash the dirty money through shell accounts and front men. Pippins wasn’t a kingpin, but a vital distributor, moving kilogram-level quantities of the poison throughout Mobile.
This sentencing comes nearly three years after the head of the snake, Darrin Southall himself, was locked up. On February 18, 2022, Southall received a 35-year sentence after admitting to running the entire criminal enterprise, including the drug distribution and a complex conspiracy to launder the proceeds. The takedown of Southall’s organization has been a long and painstaking effort, with investigators tracing the flow of drugs and money across state lines.
Judge Moorer didn’t just send Pippins away for a lengthy prison term. The sentence includes a mandatory five years of supervised release following his incarceration. Pippins will be subjected to regular drug and alcohol testing, and authorities retain the right to search his person and property at any time, based on reasonable suspicion. While a hefty fine was avoided, Pippins is still responsible for paying $200 in special assessments.
The investigation was a multi-agency effort, bringing together the Mobile Police Department, Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Homeland Security Investigations, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Saraland Police Department, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, Sheriff’s Office, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The sheer number of agencies involved underscores the scope and reach of Southall’s criminal network.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Gloria Bedwell led the prosecution, securing the conviction and lengthy sentence for Pippins. While this sentencing marks another step in dismantling the Southall organization, the Grimy Times will continue to monitor the fallout and report on any remaining players still attempting to profit from the misery of others. The streets of Mobile are a little safer tonight, but the fight against the drug trade is far from over.
