PITTSBURGH, PA – Darby Donta Tigney, a 24-year-old resident of Allegheny County, has pleaded guilty in federal court on charges of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. United States Attorney Scott W. Brady made the announcement today.
Darby Donta Tigney, who previously faced felony charges for Possession of a Firearm with an Altered Serial Number, admitted to possessing a 9mm Smith and Wesson handgun on October 14, 2018. The illegal possession came just three months after his conviction in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County.
Under federal law, individuals convicted of crimes carrying sentences exceeding one year are prohibited from owning firearms or ammunition. Tigney now faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. The actual sentence will depend on the seriousness of his offenses and any prior criminal history.
Assistant United States Attorney Shaun E. Sweeney is handling the prosecution for the government, with the Pittsburgh Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducting the investigation that led to Tigney’s prosecution.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN works with community stakeholders to identify pressing violent crime issues and develop comprehensive solutions. Through this program, enforcement efforts are focused on the most violent offenders, supported by locally based prevention and reentry programs.
