PITTSBURGH, PA — A 21-year-old Pittsburgh man is staring down a federal prison sentence after being caught with crack cocaine and a loaded firearm — a combination that triggered federal narcotics and weapons charges. Marquis McMeans, already a convicted felon, is prohibited by law from possessing any firearm, yet was found armed while allegedly trafficking drugs.
A federal grand jury returned a three-count indictment earlier this week, charging McMeans with possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. The alleged offenses occurred on or about July 5, 2021, in Pittsburgh. Evidence presented to the grand jury suggests the firearm was directly tied to McMeans’ drug operation.
Because McMeans has a prior felony conviction, his possession of a firearm is a federal crime under the Gun Control Act. Prosecutors say the charges reflect a broader pattern of armed drug activity that endangers Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Federal law mandates a minimum of 5 years in prison for possessing a firearm during drug trafficking, with a maximum penalty of life behind bars.
The indictment also carries a potential fine of up to $1,500,000. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, any prison term will depend on the severity of the offenses and McMeans’ criminal history — a record that already disqualifies him from legal firearm ownership.
The case is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher M. Cook. The investigation was a joint operation between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, highlighting the collaboration between federal and local forces in targeting violent, drug-related crime.
An indictment is not a conviction. Marquis McMeans is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law. If convicted, however, he faces the full weight of the federal justice system — including a mandatory minimum sentence and decades behind bars.
