Anthony Jose Marchionno, Bank Fraud and Identity Theft, Pennsylvania 2013

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In a gritty courtroom drama, Anthony Jose Marchionno, 29, of Pittsburgh, has pleaded guilty in federal court to nine counts of bank fraud and identity theft. This admission comes as a blow to area banks that were targeted by the cunning thief.

United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today that Marchionno utilized stolen identities from Citizens Bank and other western Pennsylvania institutions to create counterfeit checks or conduct cash withdrawals, exploiting vulnerable banking systems for personal gain.

The defendant’s guilty plea was entered on Wednesday before United States District Judge Arthur J. Schwab. Sentencing is set for June 12, 2013. Under federal law, Marchionno faces a staggering sentence of up to 225 years in prison, a fine of $2,750,000, or both.

Assistant United States Attorney Gregory C. Melucci is leading the government’s prosecution against Marchionno. The investigation that led to his capture was a collaborative effort, involving inspectors from the United States Postal Inspection Service and agents from the United States Secret Service, as part of the Western Pennsylvania Financial Crimes Task Force (WPFCTF).

Established to combat financial crimes effectively in the region, the WPFCTF is a multi-agency partnership that includes the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, the Department of Homeland Security, local law enforcement agencies, and various federal services. U.S. Attorney Hickton commended all involved for their efforts in bringing Marchionno to justice.

This case underscores the growing threat of identity theft and financial fraud, emphasizing the importance of robust security measures and vigilant law enforcement to protect consumers and the banking industry.
