Pittsburgh Man Pleads Guilty to Oxycodone Scheme
A Pittsburgh man, Christopher Nugent, 34, has pleaded guilty in federal court to one charge of violating federal narcotic laws. Nugent was charged with obtaining oxycodone through fraudulent prescriptions.
In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that Nugent conspired with others, including Ryan Raithel and David Best, to get oxycodone by fraud. They passed a fraudulent oxycodone prescription at a pharmacy in the Western District of Pennsylvania, resulting in Nugent obtaining oxycodone pursuant to that prescription.
Ryan Raithel has already pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute oxycodone. David Best, however, has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
The law provides for a total sentence of not more than four years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. Assistant United States Attorney Eric S. Rosen is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, which conducted the investigation, Nugent’s actions demonstrate a clear disregard for the law and the health and safety of the community.
Nugent is scheduled to be sentenced on May 13, 2014, at 10 a.m. His actions have set a bad precedent, and it is hoped that the court will take a firm stance in this case.
