Pittsburgh Man Guilty of Tax Fraud and Theft

A Pittsburgh man has pleaded guilty to charges of filing a false income tax return and theft of government property, according to a recent court filing.

Robert Alan Seth, Sr., 4 Danvers Avenue, Pittsburgh, pleaded guilty to two counts before United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak.

The court was advised that on April 15, 2014, Seth, Sr. filed a false income tax return for the tax year 2013. Additionally, from in and around January 2009, and continuing thereafter to in and around July 2017, Seth, Sr. collected Social Security Disability Insurance benefits for himself and for his minor child in an amount totaling $248,145.90.

The guilty plea was part of an investigation conducted by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigations and the Social Security Administration. Assistant United States Attorney Charles A. Eberle is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

The law provides for a total maximum sentence of 13 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

Judge Hornak scheduled sentencing for February 6, 2019. The guilty plea is a significant blow to the defendant, who faces a lengthy prison sentence and significant fines.

The case is a reminder that tax fraud and theft of government property will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such activities will be held accountable for their actions.
