Pittsburgh Man Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud
A resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and wire fraud, in a case that highlights the growing problem of online scams.
Michael F. Schoedel, 26, of Pittsburgh, PA, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud before United States District Judge Nora Barry Fischer.
The court was told that from on or about March 1, 2014 to March 17, 2014, Schoedel falsely represented that he had tickets to entertainment events to potential purchasers on Craigslist. He would then have potential purchasers wire money for these tickets, but Schoedel did not provide any tickets.
Assistant United States Attorney Shardul S. Desai is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Schoedel.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of online scams, where victims are lured into sending money to scammers through wire transfers or other means. Schoedel’s actions have left potential victims out of pocket, and his guilty plea is a step towards justice.
Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, Schoedel faces a total sentence of 40 years in prison, a fine of $500,000.00, or both. Judge Fischer scheduled sentencing for February 3, 2017 at 11:30 a.m.
