Pittsburgh Man Sentenced for Running Forged Prescription Ring
A 26-year-old Pittsburgh man has been sentenced to seven months of home confinement with electronic home monitoring, followed by four years of probation, for his role in a massive health care fraud conspiracy that involved operating a forged prescription ring.
Zachary Edward Rathke, a resident of Pittsburgh, was sentenced in federal court by United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak. The investigation into Rathke’s operation, which involved two co-defendants, revealed a brazen scheme to forge prescriptions for oxycodone and Percocet with the names, DEA numbers, medical license numbers, and signatures of real medical doctors.
The prescriptions, which were primarily paid for with Medicaid funds, were filled at numerous pharmacies across Western Pennsylvania. The fraudulently obtained prescription pills were then sold on the street for substantial profit, lining the pockets of Rathke and his co-conspirators.
Assistant United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. United States Attorney Scott W. Brady commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, Brentwood Police Department, Mt. Pleasant Police Department, and Bellevue Police Department for their tireless efforts in bringing Rathke to justice.
The investigation, which was a collaborative effort between multiple law enforcement agencies, uncovered a staggering scale of deception and corruption. Rathke’s operation had managed to evade detection for some time, but the perseverance of law enforcement officials ultimately led to his downfall.
Rathke’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severity of the consequences for those who engage in such brazen and destructive crimes. As the city of Pittsburgh continues to grapple with the scourge of opioid addiction, Rathke’s case highlights the importance of holding accountable those who contribute to the problem through illicit means.
The sentencing of Rathke marks a significant victory for law enforcement and the community, and serves as a warning to those who would seek to perpetuate similar schemes. It is a testament to the power of collaboration and determination in the pursuit of justice.
