John Robert Mahoney, Social Security Fraud, Pennsylvania 2023

PITTSBURGH – In a stunning turn of events, local man John Robert Mahoney, 53, has been slapped with federal charges for defrauding the Social Security system.

According to United States Attorney Scott W. Brady, a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh indicted Mahoney on four counts, including theft of government money and Social Security fraud.

The Indictment, dated June 4, accuses Mahoney of siphoning over $1,000 from Title XVI Social Security benefits between October 2015 and December 2017. It further alleges that he misrepresented to the SSA about the residence of a beneficiary he was supposed to be representing, and failed to disclose that the beneficiary did not reside with him.

Mahoney also faces charges for converting Title II Social Security benefits from October 2015 to April 2018, intended for another’s use. The severity of these offenses could lead to sentences ranging from 10 years to a combined maximum of 15 years in federal prison, along with fines totaling $500,000.

Assistant United States Attorney David Lew is handling the prosecution on behalf of the government, while the U.S. Social Security Administration – Office of Inspector General conducted the investigation that led to Mahoney’s indictment.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences for those who attempt to defraud the nation’s social safety net. An indictment is merely an accusation, and Mahoney is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
