PORT ST. LUCIE – In a dramatic turn of events, Darroll C. Gilchrist, 18, from Port St. Lucie, Fla., has entered a guilty plea for modifying a Glock firearm with an illegal ‘Glock switch’.
Gilchrist’s transgression came to light during his arrest on July 28, 2023, when law enforcement discovered the altered firearm in his possession. The modification allowed the weapon to fire multiple rounds automatically upon a single trigger pull.
The young man now faces severe consequences, with sentencing set for September 5 before U.S. District Judge Aileen M. Cannon in Fort Pierce, Fla. Gilchrist could be sentenced to up to 10 years in federal prison and an additional three years of supervised release.
This case has been investigated by ATF Fort Pierce and the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Hudock is handling the prosecution. The guilty plea is part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative, aimed at reducing violent crime through comprehensive solutions.
Project Safe Neighborhoods partners with local law enforcement and community stakeholders to tackle the most pressing violent crime issues in the area, focusing on the most violent offenders while providing support for prevention and reentry programs. This proactive approach seeks to make neighborhoods safer for all residents.
