PORTAGE, IN – Jessica Guska, a 43-year-old woman from Portage, Indiana, has been handed a substantial sentence for her role in the embezzlement scandal that shook Riptide Travel Softball. Guska, who also went by names including Jessica Irvine and Jessica Hoggard, was sentenced to four months in prison, followed by four months of home detention, and two years of supervised release.
In addition to her prison term, Guska has been ordered to pay $29,490.34 in restitution to the victim of her offense. The sentence was announced by United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson following Guska’s guilty plea to wire fraud charges.
According to court documents, Guska served as the president of Riptide Travel Softball, a competitive softball club for girls based in Cedar Lake. She was tasked with managing the club’s finances but instead siphoned off funds from August 2018 until around October 2019. The embezzled money was used to cover her personal expenses, including health care costs, air travel, vacations, and property taxes.
The investigation into Guska’s crimes was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assistance from the Cedar Lake Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Molly Kelley and Diane Berkowitz handled the prosecution of this case.
United States District Court Chief Judge Jon E. DeGuilio presided over the sentencing hearing. The gravity of Guska’s actions, which undermined the integrity of a sports organization dedicated to young athletes, has not gone unnoticed by the court.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences when trust is breached and funds are misappropriated. Guska’s sentence will ensure she does not repeat her actions while under supervision, but it also leaves a lasting impact on those who were counting on the club to provide a safe space for athletic development.
