Jaron Earl Taylor, Auto-Insurance Fraud, Maryland 2018

⏱ 2 min read

A former Anne Arundel County police officer, Jaron Earl Taylor, 32, of Ft. Washington, Maryland, has been sentenced for his role in an auto-insurance fraud scheme that involved falsifying police reports to obtain insurance payouts. The scheme, which took place between August 2018 and February 2020, involved Taylor and several other police officers, including Michael Anthony Owen, Jr., 38, of Accokeek, Maryland. The officers conspired to report fictitious losses to insurers to obtain money or avoid paying off vehicles that were now worth less than the amount owed on them.

Taylor and his co-conspirators used their status as police officers to write false police reports, which were then submitted to insurers to validate the claims. The false reports were intended to impede, obstruct, or delay the insurers’ investigations into the claims. The scheme involved several other police officers, including Candace Tyler, 39, of Bowie, Maryland, who pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, and Conrad D’Haiti, 56, of La Plata, Maryland, who pled guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.

Taylor was sentenced to three years of probation, with the first five months served on home detention, and was ordered to pay $38,670 in restitution to the United States Automobile Association. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland, Kelly O. Hayes, along with Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Paul of the FBI – Baltimore Field Office, and Chief George Nader of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

The case highlights the seriousness of insurance fraud and the importance of holding individuals, especially those in positions of authority, accountable for their actions. The sentence serves as a reminder that law enforcement officers are not above the law and will be held to the same standards as everyone else.
