PITTSBURGH – A federal grand jury has indicted Gregory M. Schur, 36, a resident of Duquesne, PA, on charges of Theft of Mail by Postal Employee for stealing prescription medication intended for veterans.
According to the indictment returned February 28, Schur, while employed at the United States Postal Service, is accused of pilfering packages addressed to customers of the Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System. The thefts reportedly occurred between May 2016 and August 15, 2016.
In addition to the prescription drugs, Schur is also alleged to have stolen first-class mail containing U.S. currency during his tenure at USPS. This brazen act has left many questioning the integrity of the postal system.
The indictment specifies that if convicted, Schur could face a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. The severity of the actual sentence would depend on the seriousness of the offense and any prior criminal history.
Assistant United States Attorney Charles A. Eberle is handling the prosecution of this case for the government. The investigation that led to Schur’s indictment was conducted by the U.S. Postal Service-Office of Inspector General.
It should be noted that an indictment is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
