Postal Worker Sentenced for Stealing from Post Office
A former postal worker from Falconer, N.Y. has been sentenced to face the consequences of her crimes after being caught red-handed stealing from the post office.
Donna Spencer, 51, was employed by the United States Postal Service since 1986 and worked as the Postmaster at the Frewsburg, N.Y. Post Office from February 13, 1999, to July 19, 2013. During her time at the post office, Spencer was responsible for collecting cash payments from customers for the purchase of postage stamps.
However, instead of depositing the cash payments into the USPS register, Spencer kept the money for her own purposes, resulting in a total loss of $14,023.50.
The scheme was uncovered after an audit of the Frewsburg facility was conducted. The investigation was led by the United States Postal Inspection Service, under the direction of Inspector in Charge Kevin Niland of the Boston Division.
Spencer pleaded guilty to misappropriation of postal funds by a postal service employee and faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000 or both. Sentencing is scheduled for May 27, 2014, at 10:00 a.m. before Judge William M. Skretny.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell T. Ippolito, Jr. is handling the case and stated that Spencer’s actions were a betrayal of the public’s trust and a serious violation of her position of authority.
The case serves as a reminder that no one is above the law, and those who betray the public’s trust will be held accountable for their actions.
