A St. Louis County man has pleaded guilty to a massive pandemic and disability fraud scheme, swindling the U.S. government out of nearly $637,000 in relief funds.
Preston Randall, 47, of St. Louis County, Alabama, admitted applying to the U.S. Small Business Administration for a series of Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) for various businesses using various names, authorities said.
The scheme involved filing false applications for EIDL loans, claiming that businesses suffered economic losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when in fact, no such losses occurred. Randall also claimed to have employees and business operations, which were entirely fabricated.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Randall’s scheme resulted in the theft of $636,800 in relief funds. He pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of making false statements to a government agency.
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, Jackson said, ‘Preston Randall’s scheme was a blatant attempt to exploit the pandemic relief programs for personal gain.’ The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Inspector General.
Randall faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. His sentencing is scheduled for March 15, 2024.
