Progressive Casualty Insurance Company, ADA Violation, Connecticut 2020
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Connecticut has reached a settlement agreement with Progressive Casualty Insurance Company, a major insurance provider, under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). The agreement comes after an individual who is blind filed a complaint alleging that Progressive failed to provide account information in an accessible format.
The complaint, which was filed with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, alleged that Progressive’s failure to provide accessible account information resulted in the cancellation of the complainant’s insurance policy. Under the terms of the settlement, Progressive has agreed to provide effective communication, including auxiliary aids and services, at all of its insurance agency locations in the U.S.
Progressive has also agreed to amend its policies, practices, and training to ensure the removal of barriers to access at its locations. The company will also compensate the complainant in the amount of $1,000. This settlement reflects Progressive’s commitment to equal access and effective communication with its customers who have disabilities.
U.S. Attorney John H. Durham praised Progressive for its cooperation throughout the investigation and noted that individuals with disabilities must not be denied equal access to services offered by insurance companies due to their disability. The matter was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ndidi N. Moses of the District of Connecticut in coordination with the Disability Rights Section of the U.S. Civil Rights Division.
Progressive’s settlement is a significant step towards ensuring equal access for individuals with disabilities in the insurance industry. The company’s actions demonstrate its commitment to complying with the ADA and providing accessible services to all customers.
