David Bourne, Explosives Possession, Connecticut 2019

HARTFORD, CT – David Bourne, 38, of Simsbury, is headed to federal prison for 37 months after admitting to illegally possessing and detonating explosives, including a brazen pipe bomb attack on a victim’s truck. U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea handed down the sentence today, followed by three years of supervised release.

The case unfolded after Connecticut State Police responded to a Hartland property on December 6, 2018, following reports of gunfire and explosions. Investigators discovered a disturbing scene: a cache of firearms – an 8mm rifle, three .22 caliber rifles – a homemade silencer, and an array of explosive materials. A YouTube video surfaced, showing Bourne, alongside accomplice Rory Mocarsky, recklessly handling firearms and explosives.

The search extended to the Tunxis State Forest in East Hartland, where the pair had been filming their destructive activities. Authorities unearthed metal fragments, sections of PVC pipe, and remnants of a suspected improvised explosive device (IED). But the most alarming discovery came later. On January 2, 2019, Bourne took his depravity a step further, hurling a pipe bomb he’d constructed directly into the back of a victim’s truck, where it detonated.

Bourne was arrested on May 9, 2019, and ultimately pleaded guilty on September 24, 2019, to one count of possession of an unregistered destructive device. He had been released on a $50,000 bond and is now required to self-report to prison within 60 days. The investigation, a joint effort by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Connecticut State Police, revealed a dangerous disregard for public safety.

Mocarsky, 38, has also faced justice, pleading guilty on July 2, 2019, to one count of possession of firearms by a convicted felon. He currently awaits sentencing. Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas P. Morabito prosecuted the case, bringing Bourne’s explosive reign of terror to a close – at least for the foreseeable future.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by illegal explosives and the commitment of federal and state law enforcement to dismantle such threats. The Grimy Times will continue to follow Mocarsky’s sentencing and any further developments in this case.
