CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The grim streets of Charleston were hit with another hard-hitting conviction as Miguel Quinones, 38, faced the music for his gun-running antics. United States Attorney Carol Casto announced that Quinones has been sentenced to five years and 10 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Quinones’ fall from grace began on October 19, 2013, when law enforcement cracked open a storage facility in Dunbar, West Virginia. It was there they discovered the felon’s ill-gotten belongings, including two firearms: a Harrington & Richardson 20 gauge shotgun and a Marlin, Model 120 Revelation .22 caliber rifle. The shocker? Quinones had been banned from owning guns due to a 2000 felony conviction for second degree murder in Fayette County Circuit Court.
This wasn’t just any investigation; the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the United States Marshals Service all came together to bring Quinones’ illegal activities to light. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Rada Herrald was on the case, and United States District Judge Joseph R. Goodwin handed down the sentence.
But this is no ordinary case; it’s a Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative aimed at reducing gun crime across the nation. The program’s networking of local programs targeting gun crime has led to Quinones’ downfall.
