CHICAGO — A brutal murder plot aimed at increasing power within the Rack City street gang has erupted into a federal racketeering investigation, with four alleged hitmen now facing life sentences. Joshua Broughton, 34, Christopher Singleton, 24, Jaron Davis, 22, and Greig Macon, 27, were all indicted on charges of racketeering and firearm offenses after the June 1, 2021, murder of Ogonnia Okeke, 25, in Chicago’s Princeton Park neighborhood.
Broughton, Singleton, Davis, and Macon are accused of shooting Okeke to maintain and expand their influence within the Rack City gang. The indictment describes the gang as a criminal organization involved in narcotics trafficking and violence, using intimidation and threats to protect their territory. Eight other members were charged last year with firearm or drug offenses.
Davis was arrested on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty during his arraignment. Broughton, Singleton, and Macon remain in federal custody. The U.S. Attorney’s Office seeks to keep all four defendants detained pending trial.
The investigation was led by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a multi-agency approach that targets drug traffickers and other criminal offenders. The charges against Broughton et al carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison, and the death penalty is also possible. Indictments are not evidence of guilt; defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case highlights the ongoing battle against organized crime in Chicago, where violence continues to grip communities. The public is reminded that an indictment is not proof of guilt and that all defendants are entitled to a fair trial.
